The use of RFID technology in blood banks and transfusion medicine has the potential to improve operational efficiency and advance patient safety at point of care by automatically identifying, reconciling, and tracking blood products throughout the blood supply chain.
The study objectives center on the following:
- Assess feasibility and impact of using RFID in the transfusion medicine supply chain as well as estimate economic and safety justification for RFID enablement.
- Develop and demonstrate a prototype system in a realistic environment and conduct testing to prove feasibility and benefits in the blood center and hospital environments.
- Develop and deploy a pilot solution, establishing a benchmark for using RFID in the blood product supply chain from blood donation through patient transfusion.
These efforts will lead to the commercialization and deployment of the RFID-enabled BPT solution in military and civilian health care organizations where failsafe distribution of blood products is critical to public health.
